Wood CFT Calculator (Cubic Feet) for Carpenters

Calculate wood and timber volume in CFT: length in feet × width × thickness in inches ÷ 144. Multiple sizes, rate per CFT and voice input.

Assumptions used VIEW ▾

CFT (cubic feet) = length in feet × width in inches × thickness in inches ÷ 144, then × number of pieces. The 144 converts two inch measurements into feet (12 × 12). This is the nominal, as-measured volume; allow extra for sawing, planing and defects when buying.

How it’s calculated

CFT = length (ft) × width (in) × thickness (in) ÷ 144 × pieces

Example: 8 ft × 4 in × 2 in × 5 pieces = 8 × 4 × 2 × 5 ÷ 144 = 2.22 cft.

Questions

Why divide by 144?+

Width and thickness are in inches. Dividing by 12 twice (12 × 12 = 144) turns them into feet, so the answer is in cubic feet.

How do I convert CFT to cubic metres?+

Divide by 35.315. For example, 10 cft = 0.283 m³.

Should I buy exactly this much?+

No. This is the finished volume. Add an allowance for sawing, planing and defects when buying timber.
