PARTITION
Gypsum Partition Calculator: Boards, Studs & Channels
How to calculate gypsum or cement board partition materials: boards for one or both sides, studs, floor and ceiling channels, screws, joint tape and board weight.
Assumptions used EDIT ▾
Usually 610 mm (2 ft); 406 mm for tiles or heavy loads.
GI sections usually come in 3 m or 3.66 m.
Gypsum about 650–800, cement fibre about 1,200–1,350.
Studs stand at the spacing below between a floor channel and a ceiling channel, with 2 extra studs at each door. Screws are 25 mm drywall screws at about 230 mm centres. Follow the board maker's system guide for heights above 3.6 m, wet areas and fire or sound ratings.

How it’s calculated
Boards = wall area × sides × layers × (1 + wastage) ÷ board area; studs = length ÷ spacing + 1
Example: A 12 × 10 ft wall, boarded both sides with 6 × 4 ft boards: about 11 boards and 7 studs.
Questions
How many gypsum boards do I need for a partition?+
Multiply the wall length by the height, take away doors, multiply by 2 for both sides, add 5–10% for cutting, and divide by the area of one board (a 6 × 4 ft board is about 24 sq ft).
What stud spacing should a gypsum partition have?+
Usually 610 mm (2 ft). Use closer spacing, such as 406 mm, where tiles or heavy shelves will be fixed.
