CEILING

False Ceiling Calculator: Gypsum Boards & Channels

How to calculate false ceiling materials: gypsum boards, perimeter channel, intermediate channels, ceiling sections, hangers, clips and screws for any room size.

Running length × height of each vertical drop, e.g. 40 ft × 0.5 ft = 20 sq ft.

Board

Gypsum: Gyproc (Saint-Gobain), USG Boral, Knauf, Siniat and others. Cement board: James Hardie, Bison, Ramco, Shera, Visaka, Everest and others.

GI sections usually come in 3 m or 3.66 m.

kg/m³

Gypsum about 650–800, cement fibre about 1,200–1,350.

Intermediate channels are hung from the slab with soffit cleats, anchor fasteners and GI hangers; ceiling sections are clipped across them; the perimeter channel is nailed to the walls at about 610 mm. Spacings differ between makers and tenders (intermediate channels 900–1220 mm), so use your drawing or the maker's guide.

How it’s calculated

Boards = ceiling area × (1 + wastage) ÷ board area; intermediate channels every 1220 mm, ceiling sections every 457 mm

Example: A 12 × 10 ft room: 120 sq ft → about 6 boards of 6 × 4 ft, 44 ft of perimeter channel.

Questions

How many gypsum boards for a 10 × 12 room?+

The ceiling is 120 sq ft. A 6 × 4 ft board covers about 24 sq ft, so 5 boards plus wastage: buy 6.

What is the spacing of channels in a gypsum false ceiling?+

Commonly intermediate channels at about 1220 mm and ceiling sections at about 457 mm across them, hung from the slab at about 1220 mm. Follow your drawing or the board maker's guide.
