TILES
Tile Calculator: How Many Tiles and Boxes for a Room
How to calculate tiles for a floor or wall: area less doors and windows, any tile size (or custom), joint width, wastage, tiles per box and cost. Feet or metres.
Assumptions used EDIT ▾
Usually 2 to 3 mm.
See the bag: often 40 to 50 sq ft per 20 kg.
Tiles = area ÷ (tile + joint) area, plus wastage, rounded up. Boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up. Buy a few extra tiles from the same batch for future repairs: shades differ between batches.

- 140 sq ft
How it’s calculated
Tiles = area ÷ ((tile + joint) area) × (1 + wastage); boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box
Example: A 12 × 10 ft floor with 600 × 600 mm tiles and 7% wastage: 120 sq ft → 33 tiles → 9 boxes of 4.
Questions
How do I calculate how many tiles I need?+
Multiply length by width to get the area, subtract doors, windows and fixed items, divide by the area of one tile and add 5–10% for cutting and breakage.
How many 2 × 2 tiles are in a box?+
Usually 4 tiles of 600 × 600 mm, about 15.5 sq ft (1.44 m²). Packing differs by brand and series, so check the carton.
How much extra tile should I buy?+
About 5% for a simple room, 10% for diagonal or patterned laying and 15% for large tiles in small spaces. Keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for repairs.
