Hardware is bought in many small trips, and forgotten items cause delays when the carpenter, plumber or electrician is waiting. Use this checklist before you visit the store, and take quantities from your drawings.

Doors (per door)

  • Hinges (typically 3 for a standard door; heavier doors may need 4)
  • Mortise lock or cylindrical lock with handles
  • Tower bolts (top and bottom)
  • Door stopper or magnetic catch
  • Door closer for the main door (optional)
  • Door viewer and safety chain for the main door
  • Screws matched to the hinge and frame

Windows

  • Hinges or sliding tracks and rollers
  • Handles and stays
  • Aldrops or locks
  • Mosquito mesh and fixing strips

Kitchen

  • Cabinet hinges (typically 2 per shutter up to about 900 mm tall)
  • Drawer channels (telescopic or soft-close) and handles
  • Sink with waste coupling and trap
  • Sink tap, and angle valves for water points
  • Gas pipe clamps (installed by an authorised fitter)

Bathrooms

  • Wall mixer or taps, shower head and arm
  • Angle valves and connection pipes
  • Floor traps and gratings
  • Towel rails, soap dishes, mirror and shelf brackets
  • Health faucet

Plumbing (whole house)

  • Pipes and fittings by size (elbows, tees, sockets, reducers, unions)
  • Ball valves at each branch and the tank outlet
  • Solvent cement and thread tape
  • Clamps for exposed pipes

Electrical

  • Switches, sockets and switch plates per point
  • Distribution board, MCBs and RCCB as designed by the electrician
  • Conduits, bends and junction boxes
  • Wires of the specified sizes
  • Fan hooks and boxes

Tips

  • Buy each finish (chrome, satin, black) from one range so fittings match.
  • Keep a list of what was bought for each room; returns are easier when items are unused and in their packs.
  • Ask the store for a single running bill for the project; it makes tracking the budget easier.
