Ceiling fan slow, humming or not starting
A fan that runs slowly or needs a push to start usually has a weak capacitor, a cheap and quick fix.
What usually causes it
- Weak or failed capacitor (the most common cause).
- Faulty regulator: the fan is fine on another switch.
- Dry or worn bearings (noise, wobble, heat).
- Low supply voltage in the evening.
What you can check yourself
- Does the fan start on its own, or only after a push? A push-start points to the capacitor.
- Does it run slow at every regulator setting?
- Listen for grinding or a rattle: that is bearings or a loose part, not the capacitor.
- Switch off at the MCB before anyone opens the fan canopy.
Parts to ask the shop for
- Fan capacitor: match the µF value and voltage printed on the old one (2.5 µF or 3.15 µF is common for ceiling fans)
- Regulator, if the fault is in the switchboard
- Bearings, only if the electrician confirms
Take the old part or a photo of it: sizes and threads must match.
What to ask the worker
- Did you test the capacitor, or replace it on a guess?
- Is the new capacitor the same µF and voltage as the old one?
