Low water pressure in taps and showers
Low pressure in one tap is usually a blocked aerator or valve. Low pressure everywhere upstairs often comes from the tank height or air in the pipes.
What usually causes it
- Scale or dirt in the tap aerator or the shower head.
- A half-closed or faulty valve in the line.
- The overhead tank is not high enough above the top-floor taps.
- Air locks in the pipe, especially after the tank ran dry.
- Pipes too small for the number of taps in use at once.
What you can check yourself
- Is it one tap or the whole house? One floor or every floor?
- Unscrew the tap aerator or shower head and clean it in vinegar or soap water.
- Check that every valve on the line is fully open.
- Look at how high the bottom of the tank is above the shower head: about 1 m of height gives about 0.1 bar.
Parts to ask the shop for
- New aerator or shower head (match the thread size)
- Ball valve for a faulty valve (match the pipe size)
- Pressure booster pump, only if the tank cannot be raised: ask for one sized for your taps
Take the old part or a photo of it: sizes and threads must match.
What to ask the worker
- Is the problem in one line or the main line?
- Can the air lock be cleared without new parts?
- If you suggest a pump: what flow and head does it need, and why?
